What is whey protein?

Whey protein is a natural protein derived from cow’s milk. While there are many sources of protein – from egg, fish and meat (animal-based proteins) to beans, lentils and nuts (plant-based protein) – whey protein is widely regarded as one of the best available. Not only does whey contain all nine essential amino acids (the building blocks of muscle), it is also absorbed by the body quickly.

What are the benefits of whey protein?

Whey protein is known as a ‘complete’ protein source as it contains all nine essential amino acids. (It also contains the 11 non-essential amino acids.)

Not only is the amino acid profile complete, it is also in the right proportion to our body’s requirements. The biological value (BV) of protein is a measure of the proportion of protein in food that can be absorbed and used by our body – anything less than 100% means some of the protein consumed may be wasted. The BV of whey protein is 100%. For comparison, beans, fish and milk have BVs of 58%, 76% and 90%, respectively.

Whey protein powders are a highly concentrated protein source. Our whey products contains 20g of pure whey protein per 25g serving. You would need to eat about 65g of lean chicken breast to obtain the same quantity of protein (this doesn't take into account the superior amino acid profile of whey).

Who should take whey protein?

Anyone who takes part in physical activities can benefit from supplementing their diet with whey protein. The amino acids in protein perform a range of critical functions in our bodies, including repairing tissue and building muscle. Whether your goal is to build muscle, increase strength or improve recovery after workouts, a high-protein diet is considered essential.

Vegetarians may also want to increase their protein intake through supplementation. This is particularly important as plant-based proteins (with the exception of soy and quinoa) are incomplete proteins. In other words, they do not contain all nine essential amino acids.

Experts recommend a daily protein intake of 1g per pound of body weight (or 2.2g per kilogram). However, most people will struggle to consume the optimum level of protein through whole foods alone. Whey protein provides a convenient and easy way to supplement a diet.

What makes this brand of whey protein so good?

Our whey protein is a premium quality, UK-manufactured protein powder sourced exclusively from the world-renowned Müller dairy in Germany: the world’s leading producer of whey protein. All milk used in the production of our whey protein products are sourced from free-range, grass-fed cows and is GM-free and hormone-free.

Each 25g serving provides 20g of 100% whey protein, including 4.4g of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). All our whey protein flavours use 100% natural flavouring and are suitable for vegetarian, halal and kosher diets. Our whey protein has been ‘instantised’ for easy mixing – mix the protein powder in a shaker bottle or simply stir in water with a spoon.

Suggested Use

Mix one large scoop* (25g) in 150-250ml of water and consume immediately. Use less liquid for a thicker and stronger tasting shake. Use milk, instead of water, for a creamier tasting shake.

For maximum benefits, consume one serving 30-45 minutes before a workout and one serving immediately after a workout.

Depending on your individual goals, we recommend 2-5 servings per day to increase your protein intake. Typical times to take a serving are: at breakfast, pre- and post-workout, between meals, and before bed. Experts recommend a daily protein intake of 1g per pound of body weight (equivalent to 2.2g per kilogram of body weight).

* One large measurement scoop is included in every pouch.

How much protein should I consume in a day?

Experts recommend a daily protein intake of 1g per pound of body weight (equivalent to 2.2g per kilogram of body weight). For example, a 165lb (75kg) person would need to consume 165g of protein per day. Depending on your individual goals, you may want to increase your daily intake.

We recommend supplementing your diet with 2-5 servings of whey protein per day.

When should I take protein?

Unlike carbohydrates and fats, the human body does not store protein. For this reason, it is important to consume protein at regular intervals throughout the day. Depending on your individual goals, we recommend supplementing your protein intake with 2-5 servings of whey protein per day, taken at breakfast, 30-45 minutes before a workout, immediately after a workout, between meals, and before bed.

Is this whey protein suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

Our whey protein is suitable for vegetarians but not for vegans.

Is your whey protein GM-free and hormone-free?

Yes. Whey protein is derived from cow’s milk. All milk used in the production of our whey protein is sourced from free-range, grass-fed cows and is GM-free and hormone-free.

Does this whey protein contain branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)?

Yes. BCAAs are a group of three essential amino acids: Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. They are the three most important amino acids in repairing and building muscle, and they account for up to one-third of muscle tissue.

A 25-gram serving of Whey Protein 80 contains 20 grams of whey protein, of which 4.4 grams are BCAAs (2.1g Leucine, 1.2g Isoleucine and 1.1g Valine).

Is Whey Protein Isolate better than Whey Protein Concentrate?

Not necessarily. Unfortunately, there is no simple yes-no answer here.

Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) typically has a protein concentration of 80% by weight, whereas Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) has a concentration of 90%. To achieve the higher level of protein concentration in WPI, whey protein goes through an additional filtration process compared to the manufacturing process for WPC. The additional filtration step removes fat and lactose (carbs), resulting in a higher protein concentration. The protein quality in WPC and WPI is the same.

Several studies point to the benefits of the fats present in WPCs that have been removed from WPIs. Other beneficial nutrients exist in WPCs that are removed during the production of WPIs, including bioactive peptides, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, immune enhancers and naturally-occurring growth factors. There is also a significant cost implication due to the additional filtration step: WPI is typically 30-40% more expensive than WPC.

If you are looking for a cost-effective 100% whey protein source, we recommend WPC. If you are sensitive to lactose or you want to reduce your overall intake of carbs and fat, and are less concerned about losing the beneficial nutrients, then WPI may be a better option.

I have seen products advertised as ‘100% whey protein’ – is this true?

In short, yes.

This is a classic case of most product brands confusing, and potentially misleading, customers. ‘100% whey protein’ refers to the protein source used. In other words, the protein content comprises only whey protein (not egg, milk, soy, etc.). It does not refer to the concentration level of protein. On the other hand, a product that is ‘80% protein’ comprises approximately 80g of protein per 100g of supplement powder; the remaining 20g is a combination of carbs, fat, minerals and moisture.

Our whey protein is ‘80% protein’ (by concentration) and ‘100% whey protein’ (by source).

Will you introduce more flavours?

We currently offer the three most popular flavours: vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. If there are other flavours that you would like, please get in touch to let us know.
